What is the "Sender"

The Sender (often called Originator or Caller ID) is the "From" number displayed when you send an SMS message.

Countries have rules regarding the Sender value allowed:

New Zealand Sender ID Rules

In New Zealand, all A2P (Application-to-Person computer messaging) needs to use a Short Code number. A shortcode is a four digit number that is authorised by the New Zealand mobile networks.

Australian Sender ID Rules

In Australia, the networks allow for two types of Sender ID:

  • Long Code (MSISDN / Virtual Mobile Number) - this is where we can set the Sender to be a full length mobile number. The number is either connected to the TNZ network as a Virtual Mobile Number, or has been flagged as real mobile phone number owned by a TNZ customer.
  • Alpha - this is a brand name, e.g. "TNZ" or "CoolCompany". This Sender tag needs to be pre-registered by TNZ and loaded under your account.

Global Sender ID Rules

Where possible, we set an Australian Virtual Mobile Number as the default Sender so that we can capture replies.

If you are messaging a particular country frequently, we can configure a local number as the Sender or set up an Alpha tag.

How to set the Sender on SMS Messages

The Sender is configured by your TNZ representative and can be:

  1. Set up per User (applies to a single user or group of users) or per Account (all users under your account), and
  2. Set up per Country (so that you have a unique Sender specific to your target countries).

Contact us for a list of users and their configured Sender value.

If you are using a per-user setting, you can 'Copy' an existing user to duplicate those settings for a new user.

If you are messaging a particular country frequently, we can configure a local number as the Sender or set up an Alpha tag.
